Welcome to Brighton Buccaneers Wheelchair Rugby Club

Fast-paced, full-contact sport designed for athletes with physical disabilities

About Wheelchair Rugby

Wheelchair rugby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport designed for athletes with physical disabilities. It combines elements of rugby, basketball, and handball, and is played on a standard basketball court. It's an intense, strategic, and physically demanding sport that offers exciting competition for athletes with disabilities!

Unlike many wheelchair sports, wheelchair rugby is a full-contact game where players use their specially designed wheelchairs to block, hit, and disrupt opponents. It was created in Canada in the 1970s and was originally called Murderball.

Wheelchair rugby became a Paralympic sport in 2000. Great Britain won their first-ever Wheelchair Rugby Paralympic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
